The first baby born in 2009 at Resurrection Medical Center, 7435 W. Talcott Ave., Chicago, is a girl -- 7-pound 13-ounce Julia Oleksy. She was delivered by Dr. Steven Bujewski, an obstetrician/gynecologist.
Julia's official arrival time was shortly after midnight -- at 12:39 a.m. Jan. 1. She is the first child of Joanna Kosmowska and Krzysztof Oleksy, of Des Plaines. The couple's extended family members live in Poland.

BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- The Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) recently approved the first drug that will help with
producing longer eyelashes, according to media reports Monday.
Latisse, produced by the company of Allergan, is
supposed to treat those who have hypotrichosis, a condition in which a person
does not have enough eyelashes. It will be available by prescription starting in
the first quarter of 2009.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty's office says the first lady will become director of medical diplomacy at Children's HeartLink, an international medical nonprofit focused on heart disease among children.
Mary Pawlenty will begin her new job on Jan. 5.

Washoe County's first case of influenza has been confirmed and health officials are urging the public to get their flu shots - if they have not already.
