Amherst County rates for emergency medical transports rise

The rates that Amherst County charges for emergency medical transports have increased for the first time in nearly six years.
Higher fuel costs and the need for more career personnel at the Pedlar Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad sparked the additional expenses. The Board of Supervisors approved the rate changes last week.

FdL County man found outside home dies at hospital

TOWN OF OSCEOLA — An 88-year-old man found outside his County Trunk F home Sunday morning has died at St. Agnes Hospital.
When the man was found at 9:45 a.m. by a neighbor he was still breathing, said Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department Lt. Rick Olig.
He was transported to the hospital where he later died.

AIDS data may end county health's condom ban

The number of Dallas County residents living with HIV and AIDS has steadily increased during the past five years.
But county health workers still are not allowed to distribute condoms in high-risk neighborhoods because of a controversial Commissioners Court policy passed 13 years ago.

County bans elderly Calif. man's fruitcake sales

The Department of Environmental Health cites an obscure law banning food businesses in private homes.
Jack Melton of Redding gave away many of his pecan-filled fruitcakes. But health officials saw a small handmade window sign offering some for sale.

CLAYTON COUNTY: Hospital fails to get bailout

Clayton County voted Tuesday against a bailout for the county’s only hospital, leaving hospital officials to look at other options, including federal aid, layoffs or —- if there’s no solution —- closing.
The County Commission voted 3-2 Tuesday night against a proposal for the county to back a $40 million bond for Southern Regional Health System.

Southwestern Riverside County students outscore state's in fitness

Students in several southwestern Riverside County school districts scored better than the state average in the Healthy Fitness Zone, a state measurement of the physical fitness of the state's students.
Statewide, students made small gains, but two in three are still not meeting state standards, according to results of the 2008 California Physical Fitness test released Tuesday.

9th victim from Colusa County bus crash dies

SACRAMENTO—A ninth victim of a charter bus crash in Northern California died Friday, officials said.
E. Vang Saelee, who had been hospitalized since the Sunday night crash, succumbed to his injuries at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, according to hospital spokeswoman Phyllis Brown. She would provide no details.

County agrees to prepare for growth

During its regular meeting Wednesday night, the Otero County Commission discussed plans for a growth study to prepare for the population explosion anticipated at area military bases.

Drugs in jails becoming a problem in county

LANCASTER - Illegal drug use in the county is on the rise, and more of those users and sellers are inside the Fairfield County Jail.
In other words, the jail houses an increasing number of people addicted to drugs who are in need of a fix.
Officials say that's what contributes to the number of conveyance charges each year, or instances of people sneaking drugs into the jails. So far this year, three people have been charged with conveyance.
